Raised Acne Scars – Choosing the best treatment for yourself

95% of all people will experience acne at some point in their lives. More often than not, they are left with acne scars which are stubborn and slowly eat away at their self confidence. Last month we discussed depressed acne scars. This month we discuss the other type of  scar – the raised acne scar.

There are 2 main types of raised Acne Scars:

a) Keloids – An abnormal scar which grows beyond the boundaries of the original site of skin injury. May worsen over time and require treatment.

b) Hypertrophic Scars – A widened or unsightly scar which does not extend beyond the original boundaries of the wound. Unlike keloids, hypertrophic scars reach a certain size and subsequently stabilise or regress.

The good news is that there is a variety of treatments available for you to choose from. Which is best for you, you may ask? Don’t worry, we have you covered.

1) INJECTIONS

WHAT IS IT?
A procedure where medication (either 5-Fluorouracil or Triamcinolone) is injected into the raised acne scar to help soften and flatten it. Do consult a certified dermatologist to advise you on which type of medication is more suitable for your individual case.

2) CRYOTHERAPY

WHAT IS IT?
A procedure which freezes scar tissue and causes it to fall off over time. If combined with injections, this can flatten raised acne scars. This treatment is limited to certain skin colours/tones as it may leave the treated skin looking lighter than surrounding skin.

3) LASER

WHAT IS IT?
A procedure where a laser is used to vaporise the scar tissue one layer at a time. The treatment starts from the top layers and slowly makes its way down to the lower layers of the tissue. A few types of lasers can be used to improve raised acne scars such as vascular lasers or fractional lasers.

4) SURGERY

WHAT IS IT?
A procedure where the doctor removes individual acne scars and repairs the wound with skin grafts or stitches. Requires lots of post surgical care in order to heal well and prevent recurrence.
